The Zion Snail is found nowhere else on earth. It's scientific name is Physa Zionis. The snails don't live in the river, instead they live on the wet walls of the canyon. They are the smallest snails in the world! There shells are very thin and there adult body size is only 5 to 6mm. There foot is large compared to it's body size. These unique snails we discovered in 1925 by Henry Pilsbry. He conducted large amounts of fieldwork and was an expert in the field. He collected and surveyed snails from all over North America. The tiny snails living on the cliff walls excited him most, even over the unique geology. Pilsbry was so excited about his discovery of a new and odd species, he described the snails as "A freshwater snail, living under unusual conditions." The founders of Zion did not know that the park was home to an unusual snail. They would have been impressed had they known.
